The most famous military leader of the Great Fatherland War, Kutuzov entered military service under General A. V. Suvorov and took part in the Russo-Turkish wars being awarded various medals for his services. Having taken part in the campaigns against the French it was his brave tactics during the invasion of 1812 that saved the Russian Army, and the nation. He died while directing the army in Germany. For his deeds in 1812 he was awarded the title of Serene Prince Smolenskii and rank of General Field-Marshal. A smiliar miniature by Ivan Grigoriev is illustrated in G. N. Komelova/G. A.
