TWO ROMAN GOLD AND GARNET EARRINGS
CIRCA 3RD CENTURY A.D.
Each with a tapering hoop of twisted and plain wires terminating in a loop, one with an oval garnet in a box setting framed by ribbon, surrounded by seven hollow spheres on a sheet backing, joined to a cluster of hollow spheres, granulation and round plates suspended below, surmounted by a ribbed tube joined to a suspension loop; the other with a conical garnet in a dog-tooth setting framed by granulation and twisted wire, surrounded by six hollow spheres on a sheet backing, joined to a similar cluster by means of a cylinder; together with a Greek gold goat-head earring, circa 4th century B.C., and a Greek gold bull-head earring, circa 2nd century B.C., each with a hoop of tapering twisted wire that hooks through a loop on the underside of the head, the heads emerging from ornamented collars with fine detailing; and two Islamic gold earrings, circa 11th century A.D., one an element from a basket earring formed of five joined hemispheres ornamented with twisted wire filigree, hollow balls along the joins and at the center of each hemisphere, the collar of twisted and plain wire with four suspension loops for attachment to the now-missing earwire; and one in the form of a filigree crescentic box, the sides with small hollow hemispheres, surmounted by a hinged arching earwire
