Lot Essay

Lear descrisse Ravenna come 'il mondo dei Pini. Questo mondo è davvero delizioso: non posso definirlo grandioso e magnifico, perchè gli alberi non sono grandi; ma le radure e il verdeggiante sottobosco rendono la scena incantevole.' Lear visitò l'Italia settentrionale al suo ritorno dalla Palestina e dall'Egitto, prima di rientrare in Inghilterra nel giugno del 1867.
Lear dipinse un olio di Ravenna basandosi su questa veduta, destinato a Charles Roundell, (si veda: Lady Strachey, Later Letters of Edward Lear, Londra, 1911, fig. p. 122, ma è improbabile che sia basato su questo disegno).
