Somov began this work in the summer of 1938 and showed it with some other paintings to Alexandre Benois: He praised 'Summer with figures' also.

Somov recalled that his two new paintings, 'The stroller's rest' and 'Evening in Grandvilliers with four figures' were prized by visitors to his studio (Diary entry dated 30 April 1939, p. 438).
In his letters and diaries, Somov referred to this painting by a number of different titles including 'Summer with figures', 'Evening in Grandvilliers with four figures' and 'A summer's evening in the countryside'.
