Lot Essay

Emmanuel Nolde was the youngest son of Baron Boris Emmanuilovich Nolde (1876-1948) and his wife Anna Andreeva Nolde (1881-1932).
Somov was invited to the Château des Touches in September 1928.

The young Monsieur Manuel, eighteen years old, is attending a school for lawyers. He is a genius in his own way and interested in everything. Keen on music, he already plays the piano quite well. We are very good friends and to thank them all for their lovely welcome, I offered to capture Manuel's likeness in pastel, to which he enthusiastically agreed at once.
Letter dated 18 September 1928, p. 343
