CHATEAU MOUTON-ROTHSCHILD

Château Mouton-Rothschild stands alone in its feat of being the only Château of the 1855 Médoc classification to change status. While this classification purported to consider only market prices in its framework, the exclusion of Mouton from the ranks of the four other 1er grand cru classé reeked of bias

The Château was certainly of high pedigree, making its first appearance in a Christie's catalogue in 1834. When Baron Philippe de Rothschild took the helm in 1922 serious strides were made to improve the quality. The young Baron proposed château bottling for all the first growths and for Mouton-Rothschild itself to ensure greater quality control and Mouton was the first to achieve Château bottling of a harvest in 1924.

The Baron diligently worked towards correcting what he called 'the monstrous injustice' of the classification. Overcoming the inertia of a system steeped in tradition, politics and tremendous wealth, Mouton was reclassified from a second to a first growth in 1973 after a 51 year campaign. No other château has been promoted or demoted from the Médoc classification since.

In 1945 Baron Philippe commissioned an artist to create a label for his wine. This tradition continues today and notable artists such as Picasso and Warhol have created labels fit for the château. The labels are highly coveted individually and collectively create a legendary collection that befits the château's accession to glory

Tasting note: Philippe de Rothschild was just 20 years old when in 1920 he took in hand the administration of Mouton. By 1924 he was finally in the saddle and this vintage displays all of his brilliance and excitement. Two superlative notes; first a jeroboam at Rodenstock's in 1985, the second at Flatt's Mouton vertical the following year: lovely colour; delicate, harmonious bouquet that blossomed in the glass.; luxuriant flavour, great length and finish. A lovely wine (It was a double-magnum of this wine that Peter Morrell, a New York wine merchant, paid the then 'huge' price of 230 pounds at Christie's in 1973. He flew to London overnight, attended the auction and returned that afternoon to a blaze of publicity.) Last tasted March 1986 ****. Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine
