Lot Essay

The compositions follow the engravings by Nicolas de Larmessin (1684-1753), after originals by Lancret (G. Wildenstein, Lancret, 1924, p.72, nos. 15-18, figs. 14-17). The present location of the original pictures, according to Wildenstein of almost identical size as the engravings, is unknown. Two, 'Spring' and 'Winter' (Wildenstein, op.cit. no.16 and 18), were recorded in the collection of Alfred de Rothschild, London, late 19th century (A description of the Works of Art forming the Collection of Alfred de Rothschild, London, 1884, I, nos.58/59) and exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1889 (nos. 89/90).
