Three engraved maps (one a large folding "Description of the South Sea & Coasts of America" 350 x 258 mm.), 4 views, 4 portraits (of Rock Brasiliano, Batholomew Portugues, Sir Henry Morgan, Francis Lolonais), numerous woodcuts in text. (Some minor pale staining.) Near-contemporary speckled calf (joints repaired, some wear to extremities); blue cloth folding case. Provenance: Narcissus Luttrell (1657-1732), annalist and book collector (inscription on flyleaf in vol. 2: "Nar. Luttrell His Book 1685"); E. Hubert Litchfield (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of this classic account of the pirates, then at the apogee of their power and menace: "the classic of buccaneering books" (Hill), first issued in Dutch in 1678. This translation was based on a Spanish edition of 1681. The appended volume contains Basil Ringrose's original account of the Pacific voyage of Bartholomew Sharpe. Sir Henry Morgan, one of the swashbuckling subjects, honored with a portrait and a view of his destruction of the Spanish fleet, sued the publisher for libel and won a judgement. The fourth part (Ringrose) is often lacking. A fine copy from the library of noted book collector Narcissus Luttrell: "Luttrell's chief contributions were as annalist and collector. Since Macaulay drew attention to them, his chronicles (compiled from newsletters and newspapers) of contemporary events, A Brief Historical Relation of State Affairs from September 1678 to April 1714 (1857), have been frequently cited by students of the period. Even more valuable, as a firsthand account, is the parliamentary diary he kept assiduously during his second term of service in the Commons" (Oxford DNB).
