KER, John. The Memoirs of John Ker, or Kerland in North Britain. London: Published by the Author, 1726.

2 volumes (of 3), 8o (212 x 134 mm). Engraved folding map of Louisiana and the Mississippi River. Vol. 1 in contemporary calf-backed marbled boards, vol. 2 in paper-backed plain blue boards; green cloth slipcase.

FIRST EDITION, lacking the third part which has no American content. The second volume contains curious notes about Louisiana and the French Dominions in America. Ker discusses "the easy access the French have to all our Colonies, on the Continent in America, from Canada to Louisiana, by Land and Water, and that without the aid of our neighbourly Indians it will not be in our power to prevent their Irruptions." Ker further emphasizes the possibility of the French settling in Louisiana, thus putting them in a position to disrupt trade with Jamaica. Howes K-101a; Sabin 37600.
