FIRST EDITION. "As early as 1817, Hall J. Kelley, of Boston, began to advocate the immediate occupation of the Oregon territory. He became an enthusiast upon the subject and spent his time and considerable money in promoting a scheme for emigration to the country. In 1829 he procured the incorporation, by the commonwealth of Massachusetts, of The American Society for Encouraging the Settlement of the Oregon Territory" (Harvey Scott, History of Portland, Portland, 1890).
The present is the first, and rarest, of the publications naming Kelley as author. His preface refers to the expedition of Lewis and Clark, which opened up the west and gave a picture of Oregon to the country. Kelley addresses his notes to "the Oregon Colonization Society, as well as, of those to mankind in general," and spends eighty pages providing details of geography, zoology, native tribes, etc. Along with numerous references to Lewis and Clark are mentions of Vancouver, whose extensive survey of the coast is detailed at length. VERY RARE: according to American Book Prices Current, this is the only copy sold at auction in the last thirty years, last sold Pacific, 14 November 1996, lot 144.
