1 page, large folio (29 x 20¾ in.), elaborate gold ink floral design along left, right and top edges, opening paragraph (stating the Tsarina's titles) also in gold, text of the treaty accomplished in a fine, calligraphic hand; an ornate pressed paper seal (12¼ x 12in.), bearing the royal crest, along lower edge, in Russian. Signed by the Tsarina at lower left, beneath the text of the Treaty.
THE TREATY OF BELGRADE, 1740: A REMARKABLY ORNATE RUSSIAN DIPLOMATIC DOCUMENT, detailing the terms by which the Russian and Ottoman empires made peace with each other after the Russo-Turkish war of 1735-1739. The Turks came to terms with Russia's Austro-Hungarian allies earlier in 1739, at the Treaty of Belgrade, leaving the Trasina's forces to fight alone. In the ensuing Treaty of Nissa, signed in 1740, Russia agreed to relinquish its claims to Crimea and Moldavia, and to forego a Black Sea fleet.
