THOMAS AQUINAS (Saint, ca 1225-1274). Super secundo libro Sententiarum. Cologne: Heinrich Quentell, 8 September, 1481.
Chancery 2o (298 x 211 mm). Collation: a10 b-o8 p6; r-y8 aa-tt8 vv-yy6 (a1v "Salutor Mundi" woodcut, a2r text, xx5v colophone, xx6r table, yy6 blank). 334 leaves (of 338, l3, l6 lacking, gg1 and gg8 supplied in contemporary manuscript). 40 lines and head-line, double columns. Types: 2:150G (head-lines and headings), 1:102G (head-lines and text). "Salutor Mundi" woodcut colored in contemporary hand in red and blue. One- to five- and eight-line initial spaces. Rubricated in red and blue, with one eight-line divided Lombard initial, flourished in red and green, smaller Lombards in alternating red and blue, some with reserved ornaments, capital strokes, paragraph signs and underlines. (b1 remargined, some light staining, a few old repairs.)
Binding: contemporary Magdeburg blindstamped calf over wooden boards, by the Domincan I or II, "Meister mit dem Flammenherzen" or his apprentice (Schunke), upper cover paneled with an intersecting triple fillet, to a rectangular design, outer panels filled with a heart "Flammenherz" tool, inner panels with floral and fleur-de-lys tools, around a central panel of "Laubstab" tool, the lower cover blind-tooled in a characteristic "hanseatic" (Schunke) manner, with a triple fillet to an overall lozenge and triangle pattern, compartments containing single heart "Flammenherz" stamp, evidence of two clasps, brass cornerpieces, contemporary vellum title label with brass framing strips on upper cover, pastedowns from a 14th-century (?) missal on vellum written in red and black in a large gothic textura (splitting and some chipping to leather at head of spine, not affecting soundness of binding). Provenance: Erxleben, Lehns-Bücherei (old ink stamp on a1).
