A POPULAR, SOMEWHAT ECCENTRIC EDWARDIAN WRITER TOURS AMERICA UNDER THE AEGIS OF IMPRESARIO, J. B. POND. Dunsany, an Anglo-Irish soldier, playwright and novelist, was popular among the reading public (less so among the critics) for his fanciful, other-worldly tales of elves, spirits, and time-travelers. Here we see him corresponding with Pond--almost always in the third person--about his lecture tour through the major cities of the Northeast and upper Midwest. (24 Nov. 1919): "...As for the people who wrote to complain I think they were unreasonable--the only time he was late was when the motor broke down & Mr. Williams has always got him there in plenty of time...Of course he doesn't go into the lecture hall in time to talk to a lot of people first, but he always is glad to see anyone after." He managed to squeeze in appearances at the National Arts Club, and even the Navy brig at Portsmouth.
In stark counterpoint to his fanciful fiction, Dunsany experienced combat in the Boer War, the Great War, and the suppression of the Easter 1916 rising, during which he was wounded. In 1940-41 he was professor of English at the University of Athens, just in time for the German invasion. Together 11 items. (11)
