8o. Original black cloth; dust jacket (some darkening, some very minor wear at edges); cloth slipcase. Provenance: Edward Holten Schmidt (bookplate, ink annotation on front free endpaper); Jonathan Goodwin (his sale part III, Sotheby Parke Bernet, 12 April 1978, lot 632, part).

FIRST EDITION, FIRST IMPRESSION with "first American edition" on the verso of the title-page. Although the first impression consisted of 4165 copies, 3377 were destroyed because the margins were incorrectly set as a result of unskilled war-time labor.
