Lot Essay

The images of dwarfs represented here are taken from designs by Baccio del Bianco (1604-54) and Jacques Callot (1592/3-1635). The former worked extensively in the Medici court on furniture, mosaics and interiors, while Callot's celebrated series of engravings Varie figure Gobbi di lacopo Callot fatto in Firenza Ianno 1616, shows a 16th century travelling troupe of performing dwarfs who were at the court of Cosimo II at the same time as Callot.
