MARK OF CB WITH A PIPE, SIGNED "A.LANSON" for ALFRED-DESIRE LANSON, (1851-1898), PARIS, CIRCA 1890,
Modelled as Hercules & the Mare of Diomedes, Hercules with raised club in one hand whilst the other grips the wrist of the rearing female centaur, her long hair flowing down her back, a bow in her free hand, on a simulated rocky rectangular base, 21 in. high (53.5 cm.), 17½ in. long (44 cm.), 294 oz.

Further details
Alfred-Désiré Lanson was a well-known academic sculptor, born in Orléans in 1851. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Rouillard, Jouffroy & Millet, working in Paris for most of his life. He exhibited at the Paris Salons from 1870 until his death in 1898. In 1889 he won a Grand Prix at the Exposition Universelle for a sculpture now in the Louvre's collection.
