Lot Essay

Richard Brakenburgh was a pupil of Hendrick Mommers, and was also influenced by the works of Jan Steen. He predominantly painted genre scenes, often depicting revelries in village taverns. The religious subject of the present work is rather more unusual in the artist's oeuvre.
