Lot Essay

These fauteuils are stamped 'BOVO' which stamp has generally been linked to Leonard Beauveau, a menuisier working in the circle of the ébéniste Nicolas Heurtaut, himself maître in 1753 (B. Pallot, The Art of the Chair in 18th Century France, Paris, 1989, p. 218).
A closely-related suite of seat furniture stamped by BOVO and featuring identical carving to the cresting, seat and cabriole legs, was sold at Drouot-Richelieu, Piasa SVV.M.Dillée, 28 June 2006 (EUR 295,720). Further related fauteuils by or attributed to BOVO include a suite from the collection of Mrs. Barbara Piasecka Johnson, sold at Christie's, London, 1 December 2005, lot 198, and a cabriole chair in the Wrightsman Collection, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv.1977.213), ill. Ibid., p. 218.
