Lot Essay

Jean-Henri Riesener, maître in 1768.

With its slender proportions and sober lines, this rafraîchissoir or jardinière stamped by Riesener is characteristic of the inherently elegant oeuvre of the celebrated ébéniste. The present lot is closely related to a pair of jardinières from the Dodge Collection, stamped by the ébéniste Jean-Joseph Gegenbach (dit 'Canabas'), sold, 24 June 1971, lot 109, and to another, sold more recently, Sotheby's, Paris, 14 June 2006, lot 194. A further related rafraîchissoir stamped by Riesener, was sold at Sotheby Parke-Bennet, Monaco, 25 June 1989, lot 3165 (FF421,800).
