Lot Essay

The copper plate support on which this picture is painted was originally used to print the Game of the Goose in an edition that was published by F. van den Wijngaerde (1614-1679). The Game of the Goose, which consists of a spiralling gameboard pattern with 63 fields, was apparently invented by Francesco I de' Medici as a gift for Philip II of Spain in circa 1580, and spread quickly in popularity across Europe.
