CIRCA 1728, BLUE CROSSED SWORDS MARK, DREHER'S INCISED TO FOOTRIM
Painted by J.G. Höroldt with chinoiserie figures on a terrace supported by double iron-red lines, one figure pushing a seated dignitary in a canopied rickshaw, a seated lady nearby feeding a dog, the vessels on a table and the jardinière of flowers on a pedestal enriched in Böttger-lustre, a gilt Laub-und-Bandelwerk border near the rim and around the gilt spout, the S-scroll handle with indianische Blumen, the domed cover with further figures below a gilt ball finial, broad gilt band rims (interior edge of pot rim with minute chip, some flaking and wear to gilding, in particular to upper rim of pot, edge and underside edge rim of cover and finial)

Lot Essay

A similar scene of a figure in a rickshaw is on sheet 14 of the Schulz Codex, which is illustrated on p. 75. Another similar figure in a rickshaw occurs on an engraving published by Arnoldus Montanus, Gesantschappen aem de Kaisaren von Japan, der Ostindischen Kompagnie (Amsterdam, 1669), p. 168, which is illustrated by S. Ducret, Keramik und Graphik (Brunswick, 1973), p. 190, no. 342.
