Lot Essay
Lear again complains about the cold he endured on his walking tour; however, he was impressed with Eze, which may explain the number of drawings of the town he executed (see lots 68 and 69). He noted in his diary on this day: 'above Villefranche I got out and walked (it was clear & cold) to the spot I wanted to draw Eze from above, before the diligence came up & its horses returned from Turbia ere I had done. A strangely wild & magnificent coast scene is this, I know no finer. It was bitterly cold & the wind very high - & was glad to have a thick cloak. On the second point which is equally surprising & this was about 11.30 or 12. Eze is assuredly an astonishing place - & so various.'
