Lot Essay

At the time when this painting was exectued the Ottoman Empire was enjoying the only time of relative calm in a century dominated by war, first with Venice and later with Austria and Russia. Sultan Mahmud I (r.1730-1754) was on the throne, and the empire had begun its long period of decline.
