Lot Essay

The 1946 production of Sleeping Beauty marked the reopening of the Royal Opera House after the Second World War. The première performance was attended by King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, the Prime Minister Clement Atlee and a host of other V.I.Ps. Margot Fonteyn danced Aurora to huge acclaim against the backdrop of the much praised sets designed by Oliver Messel.
