Lot Essay

The popular satirical ITV series Spitting Image ran from 1984 to 1992 and won an International Emmy in 1986 for Outstanding Popular Arts. Its enduring popularity was also evidenced in the recent Channel 4 poll of 100 Greatest Television Moments - the famous sketch of Thatcher in a restaurant with members of the Cabinet when she orders a steak, the waitress asking What about the vegetables? and Thatcher replies They'll have the same as me... was ranked amongst the Top 100.

At least three different puppets of Margaret Thatcher were made during the eight years that Spitting Image ran.
