A Dutch ebony and padouk wood striking and astronomical 'Haagse' clock with pull quarter repeat

The door with moulded demi-lune cresting flanked by later brass finials, with plain tapering pilasters above a moulded plinth, opening on concealed hinges via integral side-positioned catch operated with the winding key and resting on two bun feet, the case with glazed side panels within moulded frames and supported by two further bun feet, the detachable rear panel inlaid with a rosewood parquetry star, the upper rear with brass hanging loops, the dial secured with pins to the rear and with velvet-covered brass plate, gilt-brass skeletonised Roman chapter ring with protuding minute markers and five minute calibrations, the centre with pierced and engraved foliate frame around three apertures for age of moon, penny moonphase and state of tide, with decorative brass collets to the winding squares and further foliate mount framing the date aperture, pierced and engraved brass hands, skeletonised signature Willem Stampioen Rotterdam, the French style one week movement with rectangular plates joined by five ringed vase-shaped back-pinned pillars, twin barrels, three spoke wheelwork, verge escapement with silk suspension and cycloidal cheeks, inside rack hour strike on bell above the case, repeating the hours and the quarters on the hour bell and two further bells, via repeat cords to each side of the case, secured to a bar positioned across the front plate, the back plate with pierced and engraved two-piece back cock and signed Willem Stampioen Rotterdam; pendulum

Little is known about Willem Stampioen other than that he was working in Rotterdam in 1698.
'Hague' clocks with astronomical features such as moonphase are rare. Plomp and Vehmeyer both illustrate an example by Jan van Leeuwarden which shows date and moonphase with age of moon. Plomp also shows a clock by Ahasuerus Fromanteel with arched moonphase (fig.43) and an exceptional red tortoiseshell clock by van Ceulen with full calendar and moonphase.
