A Roman man carrying fasces and arms, seen from behind

A study for the artist's etching titled Homme, vu de dos, portant un trophée d'armes, signed and dated 1751 (P. Jean-Richard, François Boucher: gravures et dessins provenant du Cabinet des dessins et de la Collection Edmond de Rothschild au Musée du Louvre, Paris, 1978, p. 29, no. 23). It includes four figures while the print has five, and unlike the other drawings related to the print, the figure lower right faces the viewer as in the print. Another drawing related to the print is at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, and its counterproof is in the Louvre (Méjanès, op. cit., p. 143, fig. 1; p. 144, no. 69). There is also a drawing of similiar composition, worked up in pen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (see J. Bean and L. Turcic, 15th-18th Century French Drawings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1986, p. 39, no. 33).
The etching was published in 1751 in the Nouveau Livre de diverses figures inventées et gravées en partie par François Boucher peintre de Roy.
