Lot Essay

Renesse occasionally studied with Rembrandt from the end of the 1640s to the mid-1650s. Professor Sumowski suggests that this drawing probably dates from circa 1652 and notes that the corrections which he attributes to Rembrandt can be compared to the reworkings on another drawing by Renesse of The Annunciation in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin (W. Sumowski, op. cit., p. 4920; some other scholars attribute the retouching to Renesse himself, see H. Bevers, 'Die Zeichnungen von Rembrandt im Berliner Kupferstichkabinett', Berlin, 2006, under no. 47).
