With a gilt-ground coat-of-arms above the inscription Morgan in black and between crossed laurel branches, narrow borders of gilt starred blue enamel, comprising:
A square bowl, 11¼ in. (28.6 cm.) diameter
Five graduated platters, 15 to 10 5/8 in. (38.1 to 27 cm.) wide
Seven dinner plates, 9 7/8 in. (27 cm.) diameter
26 side plates, 7½ in. (19 cm.) diameter

Together with a group of pieces with matching borders but no arms, comprising:
A pair of vegetable tureens and covers, 11 in. (28 cm.) wide
A sauceboat, 7½ in. (19 cm.) long
Three graduated platters, 17 1/8 to 14¼ in. (43.5 to 36.2 cm.) wide
Six side plates, 7 7/8 in. (20 cm.) diameter (53)

Lot Essay

From a service made for Elias Morgan of Hartford, Connecticut (ancestor of J.P. Morgan) whose brother, John, had ordered a nearly identical service (with no inscription) that returned from China on the Empress of China. These services were among the very first special orders for the new direct American trade with China. See D.S. Howard,The Choice of the Private Trader, p. 102.
