Of flattened baluster form and basketweave molded, decorated front and back with a panel centering the arms of Fitzroy impaling Cosby above the motto ET DECUS ET PRETIUM RECTI within a garland of flowers and gilt bamboo, flanked by two bois-simulé handles, the cover with Buddhistic lion finial

Lot Essay

The arms of those of Elizabeth Cosby, daughter of the governor of New York, Colonel William Cosby, and her husband Augustus Fitzroy, third son of the 2nd Duke of Grafton. Their son Augustus Henry succeeded his grandfather as 3rd Duke in 1957 and later became Prime Minister in 1769.
