Thomas Pitt is famed for having purchased a diamond for 20,400 pounds. Later known as 'The Pitt Diamond', this gigantic gem weighed no less than 127 carats. After selling the enormous diamond at a hefty profit (he sold it for 135,000 pounds to the Regent of Orleans), it became the most precious stone in the Crown of France. Pitt later became Governor General of Jamaica and his son became the Earl of Londonderry. See D.S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, vol. I, p. 176.
