Lot Essay

The image on the teapot is known to be after a Thomas Stoddart mezzotint entitled Coming Home from School. The scene on the teabowl and saucer is also thought to be after Stoddart and depicts the children calmly leaving for school under the eye of their mother. For a further discussion, see Howard and Ayers, op. cit., 291 and Hervouët and Bruneau, op. cit., p. 92.
