Lot Essay

Pompeo Mariani was born on 9th September 1857 in Monza, Italy. His mother Giulia (1838-1914) was the first daughter of the painter Giosui (1803-1875) and sister of the most famous artist of the Bianchi family, Mosh (1840-1904). Mariani's house was often visited by artists and poets such as Alessandro Manzoni.
The work presented was painted in 1911 which was the period when Mariani got married and settled down in a little villa in Bordighera where he spent most of the year. From Bordighera he often went to Monte Carlo, attracted by the elegant life and fashionable people that frequented the halls of the casinos and cafés. Many paintings by Mariani are inspired by the frivolous atmosphere of the casinos.
