Lot Essay

The present lot is to be dated to 1645-1650; the influence of Jan van Goyen is apparent both in composition and colour scheme: similar are Van Goyen's depictions of Egmond and Scheveningen of 1641 and 1643 (H.U. Beck, Jan van Goyen, II, 1973, nos.933, 936 and 949). In contrast to Van Goyen's style at this time, De Momper concentrates less on anecdotal detail and more on atmospheric rendering of the landscape.
