Each of scroll shape with foliate-carved spiral terminal, covered in cream material depicting birds and peacocks amidst branches, on a reeded base with ormolu bun feet, one foot replaced in giltwood

Lot Essay

The pattern for this 'Grecian' acanthus-flowered and truss-scrolled stool was invented by the Mayfair cabinet-maker Joseph Gregson (d. 1827) and published in R. Ackermann's, The Repository of Arts, 1813. Related stools accompanied a suite of 'Grecian' furniture commissioned in 1808 by Walter Ramsden Hawksworth Fawkes and supplied for Farnley Hall, Yorkshire by the Oxford Street cabinet-maker Thomas Carter (d. 1815).
