Lot Essay
The library writing-table is executed in ormolu-enriched and black-figured rosewood in early 19th century French antique fashion promoted by cabinet-makers such as George Oakley of Bond Street. Lyric poetry is evoked by its altar-drum top being supported on Grecian lyre-scrolled pilasters that are strung with pearled and golden ribbon-guilloches. Such centre or 'loo' tables were generally supplied en suite with card-tables; and amongst related card-tables, with this pattern of frame, is one at Broughton Castle, Yorkshire (Christie'’s Archive).
