Lot Essay

The original is in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden, inv.no.423 (Safarik, op.cit., no.30, with ill.), a second version of which is in the Galleria Palatina, Florence (Safarik, no.30a). The popularity of the original is evident from the large number of copies. Safarik lists no less than seventeen (his nos.30b-30s.)
The subject is taken from Luke, XIV:1-8.
