Lot Essay

The feet and knee brackets on this sofa are virtually identical to those on a sofa made by Duncan Phyfe for James Brinckerhoff in 1816. See Jeanne Sloane, 'A Duncan Phyfe Bill and the Furniture it Documents', The Magazine Antiques (May, 1987), plates I and II, pp. 1106-1107.
