The case with S-scroll handle to moulded cushion top applied with foliate mounts, those to the sides laid over silks, with flaming urn finials to the corners, possibly later pierced brass foliate and mask frets to the front door top rail and above the sides glasses, foliate front door escutcheons, on moulded base and raised on later block feet, the 6 in. square gilt-brass dial with winged cherub mask spandrels to the silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with elaborate sword hilt half quarter hour markers, matted centre with ringed winding hole and date aperture with engraving around, blued steel hands (repaired), the movement with five ringed pillars, single chain and fusee movement, reconverted verge escapement and restored pull quarter repeat on two bells, the back plate with chevron-engraved border and tulip and thistle decoration around signature reserve Jacobus Goubert/London; key

Lot Essay

James, or Jacobus, Goubert was of French extraction. He was Free of the Clockmakers' Company 1690-1701.
