Lot Essay

It would appear that this impressive centre table was supplied for the Drawing Room at Strawberry Hill, when the Waldegrave wing of the house was added in the 1850s. Many of the furnishings for this expansion of Walpole's original villa were executed by the Finsbury firm of William Smee and Sons, who issued a catalogue entitled Designs for Furniture, in 1850. Frances Elizabeth Anne, Lady Waldegrave (d.1879) was an inspired decorator during her tenure at Strawberry Hill. She commissioned the Oxford Street decorator Charles F. Nosotti (d.1909) to supply the 'Countess of Waldegrave' Drawing Room cabinet which was exhibited at the 1862 International Exhibition.
