Lot Essay

This coat was acquired in Paris among a collection including items by Delaunay, and was attributed to her. It shows her typical abstract use of colour, although the lack of a lining implies theatrical use. Delaunay's use of abstract colour blocks had roots in her creation of patchwork quilts for her own son Charles.
