THE DEAN OF CHATEAUNEUF
Henri Bonneau presides over nearly 15 hectares of vines, where he crafts some of the biggest and boldest renditions of grenache in the world. His ancient and dusty cellars are legendary, as is the man himself, for being a link to the past. There is nothing polished, modern or remotely slick about any of the wines. They are feral animals incapable of being tamed, only admired and appreciated for their stunningly singularity and enviable lifespan.
Châteauneuf-du Pape, Cuvée Marie Beurrier--Vintage 1989
Rhône, Henri Bonneau
Levels: 2cm or better; four slightly damp stained labels.
"The 1989 Marie Beurrier reveals a dark plummy color, a huge, sweet nose reminiscent of brandy-soaked fruitcake, opulent, full-bodied flavors that exhibit excellent concentration and a powerful, heady, intensely spicy finish. In spite of its size, this broad-shouldered wine can be drunk now. Anticipated maturity: now-2006." Robert Parker, Rhone Book (Jan 1997).
