Of flattened form with flat lip and flattened foot made up of elements of the design, well-carved through the transparent red overlay with a continuous design of four pomegranates and leaves growing from a branch, with one leaf curling beneath the bottle, tourmaline stopper with gilt-metal collar

Lot Essay

This deep ruby-red color, thick overlay and masterful, well-rounded carving of a powerful design is typical of the first phase of glass overlay from the late Kangxi, to the early Qianlong period and the style is attributed to the Palace workshops.

Glass overlays made at the Palace would have been produced in the Imperial glassworks and carved in the lapidary workshops by lapidaries who also worked in various stones, including nephrite.
