A Bronze Incense Burner
Meiji period (late 19th century)
With globular basin supported by three dragon-form feet supported by a stepped hexagonal base fitted with six phoenix struts, the basin applied with flared phoenix-form handles suspending rings and paulownia tablets and fitted with a pierced, domed cover surmounted by a kirin-form finial, the decoration patinated in gilt, silver, shibuichi and copper with butterfly scroll on the base, rui flowerheads, large phoenix and paulownia reserves on one side of the basin and a warrior and retainer in a landscape on the opposite side, both reserves in raised relief; the cover detailed with gilded lappets and chiseled with clouds
