Lot Essay
Born on 2 August 1915 in Kanazawa City, Hasuda Shugoro studied at Ishikawa Prefectural Industrial School and graduated from Tokyo Art School in 1938. He won his first award at the Nitten Imperial Art exhibition in 1949 and helped to found the Creative Crafts Association in 1952, the Japan Modern Craftsmen's Association in 1961 and the Japan Metal Sculpture Institute in 1976. He was appointed Bunka Korosha [Member of the Order of Cultural Merit] in 1987 and currently resides in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture. The vase is a combination of international modernism with a more traditional Japanese aesthetic.
