Lot Essay

Lebedev is a well-known historical and genre painter. Born in Moscow he came from a farming background. He studied in the prestigious Stroganov School of Arts, Moscow, under V.P. Perov, E.S. Sorokin and V.E. Makovskii. Lebedev is recognized for his realistic style, painting Russian historical scenes of XVI-XVII centuries. His talent is especially evident through the lyrical and satirical scenes of everyday life of the Russian boyars. Lebedev is also well-known for his illustrations of books and digests, including examples for Russian fairy tales, some of which are included in these lots.
