DICKENS, Charles. Master Humphrey's Clock. By "Boz." London: Chapman and Hall, 1840-1841.
3 volumes, 8o (257 x 169 mm). Three frontispieces, and numerous wood-engravings in the text by George Cattermole and Hablot K. Browne ["Phiz"]. (Lightly browned, one or two spots, a few pale stains, p. 201 in volume one torn with loss not affecting the text.) Original purple-brown straight-grained cloth, covers decorated with blind border of thick and thin fillets and broad elaborate flower leaf and stem design, in the centre of each front cover a fine gilt clock tool the hands of which point to the hour which corresponds to volume number, spine lettered and decorated in gilt with five scrolled shields and three leaf-bulb designs, blue, red and green marbled endpapers, all edges marbled (extremities very lightly rubbed, spines a bit faded, front free endpaper of volume three with small repair). Provenance: John B. Daseut (bookplates; identifying signatures possibly by binder); Kenyon Starling (bookplates).
