8o (160 x 98 mm). Hand-colored lithographic frontispiece and one plate "by the author," vignette title printed in red and blue (lightly browned). (Lightly browned, one or two spots.) Original red fine-ribbed cloth, covers decorated with blind border of triple fillet with fleur-de-lis and scrolls at each corner, surrounding central gilt vignette and lettering on upper, spine lettered in gilt within an elaborate floral wreath, all edges gilt (extremities lightly bumped, one or two marks). Provenance: Charlotte Hughes (contemporary gift inscription on front free endpaper); Kenyon Starling (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION. The "Preface" states: "The following Pages were suggested, and thrown off upon reading Charles Dickens's 'Chimes,' with the powerful descriptions and intimitably delightful Hero, with which the author sympathizes, while differing from the moral they illustrate." Yale/Gimbel H472.
