Details
DICKENS, Charles. Dombey and Son. New York: Wiley and Putnam (parts 1-17) and John Wiley (parts 18 and 19/20), 1846-48.
20 parts in 19, 8o (188 x 126 mm). Half-title. 36 plates after Hablot K. Browne ["Phiz"] (see note below). (Pale marginal stain at end of part 15.) Original tan printed wrappers (wrapper of part 13 loose,
some minor soiling, generally fine). Provenance: G.W. Haven (pencil signatures on some titles); B. George Ulizio (bookplate in slipcase chemise; his sale American Art Association/Anderson, 30 January 1931); Kenyon Starling.
FIRST AMERICAN EDITION IN MONTHLY PARTS. Although the list of plates in the final part lists 38 plates (conforming to the English edition), apparently only 36 were issued with the American edition in parts. Two additional plates are advertised on the final wrapper: "The Illustrations for these numbers will be ready on the 15th of May, and may be had gratis of any bookseller." The Gimbel copy (A104) similarly contained 36 plates, as did the Estelle Doheny copy.
According to Wilkins "the text [was] set in type as soon as the English number was received and printed at once without waiting for the engraving of the plates for that number, so that the plates were always one number behind the text. The Phiz plates were redrawn and engraved on wood by J.W. Orr." Advertised on the rear wrappers are other recent publications by Wiley and Putnam, including Poe's Tales and The Raven and Melville's Typee. RARE: according to American Book Prices Current, only three complete copies have sold in the last thirty years. Edgar & Vail, p.312; Wilkins, p.35. A FINE COPY.
