etching, circa 1542, watermark Small Jug (similar to Briquet 12500), a good, strong impression of this unrecorded print, trimmed to or close to the subject, retaining a fillet of blank paper outside the borderline in most places, a small repair in a blank area at the right sheet edge, a horizontal central fold mainly visible verso, some minor creases and soiling, a small worm hole to the knee of the second rider at left, generally in good condition

Lot Essay

The present, apparently unrecorded print belongs to a group of etchings by Fantuzzi related to the so-called Frieze of Sigismond in the Palazzo del Té at Mantua, which was designed by Giulio Romano and executed as a stucco frieze by Primaticcio. Zerner records eight etchings from this series by Fantuzzi, all of which are exceedingly rare.
